Unit 25 Final evaluation
Final evaluation
For our first task, we had to research studio food photographers in order to take some techniques and learn about studio food photography more. I researched three photographers called Marcus Nilsson, David Munns and Matt Armendariz. What I got from all of those photographers were that simplicity in your photos is the best way to go about it. The next task was primary research where we had to go out and take pictures of food. I chose to go to the Oastler market to take pictures of fruit and vegetables.
For this next task, we had to research the two different lighting types which were high key and low key. When researching these lighting types I found that using high key would be a better choice when taking food photographs because it looks like a window like. However, if you wanted a more dramatic effect with your images then you would use low key lighting. This follows into the next task which is studio lighting attachments. This is where we looked up different lighting attachments for the studio which included beauty dish, standard reflector, softbox and snoot. Which we can use the high key and low key with these.
The next task was to research exposure meters, this is where we researched incident and reflective light meters. This task helped a lot because without understanding how light meters work we wouldn't have been able to take pictures. The next task was to plan our studio shoots where we sketched our ideas and planned what props we would take and how we would use them to take photos.
The next four tasks were shoots for cookies, coffee, fruit and bread. All of these shoots went very well as they were lit correctly and compositioned correctly. However, I wish I would've planned more when it came to the bread shoot. I also wish that I would've used a reflector to decrease the hard shadows that occurred when using the low key setup with the snoot. After all the shoots were done we then made contacts of them, edited them and analysed them. I found that when editing and analysing them I reflected on what I did well and what I could've improved.
The design process was the next task, this task was an interesting task because we had to add knowledge to our audience, what our ideas were and the process that we went through.Next was cafe culture research where we researched five different cafes, data on the types of people who visit cafes, logos and menu design. This helped me grasp the type of audience I would have with my own cafe and how menus and logos normally look. At this point, I wanted to make a cafe that wasn't anything similar to the local ones. The next task was good typography and bad typography which was where we had to look at how type can be good and bad and what makes it that way.
After this task, the next task was to experiment with type, shapes and colours. After doing this task I realised what type, shape and colour I wanted for my logo and menu. Next was to draw our own sketches of our menu. I had an idea straight away and have continued with that idea along the design process with minor changes. Next was to actually create our menus and web page which I found difficult at times due to my program crashing multiple times.
After creating multiple menus I made a final menu and website by adding my own photography. The next task was to pick my five final images. After picking those final images I then had my last task which was to make my presentation which included the photographers I researched, studio lighting attachments, my photos, menu and website.
