Unit 33 Evaluation
Evaluation
For the brief we were told that we would be doing a double unit which is two units together, the first unit was unit 33: Lens-based image making and the second unit called unit 8: Design principles. Throughout the brief we learnt about wide angle and telephoto lenses and the effects given by them. We then went on to discuss about design principles and how we would apply these principles within our own images.
We were then told that our project for this unit is called portrait, the scenario was that we were being commissioned by a Sunday newspaper magazine picture editor to produce a series of portraits. This meant that we had to use the images we would take to create a magazine front cover and double page spread and then design it as well.
Then we went on to talking about what a portrait is and the different types of portraits. After learning about portraits we then went on to analyzing magazine designs. Towards the end of the brief we got more information about how many images and the deadline. We needed to produce a minimum of 6 final portraits on a CD, plus two professionally produced prints of our magazine layouts 1 A4 sized front cover and 1 A3 double page spread in horizontal format.
Our first task was to research the following lenses listed below:
The next task was image sensor size for this task we had to find out what our own cameras image sensor size was and we did this by researching our camera by name then writing down the image sensor size and crop factor. Then after using the crop factor we had to work out the approximate focal length of the following lenses (18mm, 50mm and 200mm.)
Next was the studio shoot where we was asked to produce a series of portraits. The portraits we needed to do were;

Our first task was to research the following lenses listed below:
- Prime Lens
- Zoom Lens
- Wide Angle Lens
- Telephoto Lens
- Standard Lens
- Portrait Lens
- Depth of Field
- Differential Focus
- Focal Length

Next was the studio shoot where we was asked to produce a series of portraits. The portraits we needed to do were;
- High key lighting portrait
- Low key lighting portrait
- Head and shoulders portrait
- Full length portrait
- A close-up portrait
Next was the portrait shoot proposal where we had to write 300 words minimum about what we were planning on doing in our shoot and who our subjects were. After my proposal was written I had to go and do my three shoots this is because I planned on doing three magazines which were childrens, skateboarding and photography but because of time I only did two magazines which had a different outcome and they were vaping and skating.
After shooting we then had our last task which was contre-jour, this was a primary task where we had to demonstrate the halo effect on our subjects. We had to produce a head and shoulders portrait and a three quarter length portrait in both horizontal and vertical format. After shooting we then came back and critiqued each others contre-jour photos.
Finally I then burned my final 6 images on to a CD then got my A4 and A3 printed at ProAm .
