Unit 6 Secondary research task 1B
Social Documentary
Henri Cartier-Bresson was a French humanist photographer. Who has been considered as the master of candid photography. He pioneered the genre of street photography and conceived photography as capturing a decisive moment. His work has inspired many photographers including the great Martin Parr. Henri loved the fact that the Leica cameras were so small and he even customised his own by painting the shiny parts of the camera black so he wouldn't stand out.
Jacob Riis was a Danish-American social reformer, journalist and social documentary photographer. He is known for using his photographic and journalistic talents to help the poor, impoverished in New York City. Those impoverished New Yorkers were the subject of most of his photography. Riis had thought some time about how to express more than his words could, so he tried drawing which he wasn't very good at until he tried photography. Even though the camera lenses and photographic plates at the time were slow. Riis read that "a new way had been discovered to take pictures by flashlight."
Martin Parr is a British documentary photographer, photojournalist and photobook collector. He is well known for his photographic projects that take an intimate, satirical and anthropological look at aspects of modern life in social classes of England. This is what Parr has said about his own photography; "The fundamental thing I'm exploring constantly is the difference between the mythology of the place and the reality of it."
