Task 2 Proposal

The genre I have chosen is Social Documentary, I have chosen this genre because I have a great interest in the artist John Bulmer who is known for his use of colour in his social documentary photography. The other reason I chose this genre is because I want to be able to create images that capture the contrast of living between Palma, De Mallorca, Spain and Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The ideas that I have will hopefully be able to represent the people and the city in both countries to see if there are any drastic similarities or differences in both countries.

The photographers that have influenced me are Martin Parr and John Bulmer. This is because Martin Parr shows the reality of living in Britain with a comedic twist and John Bulmer shows England and it's more beautiful locations. I have a few ideas but the main one is to be able to capture the people of Leeds in popular Leeds places vs the people of Palma in popular Palma places. The second idea is to be able to show not only the beauty in both cities but the reality of living there too. My target audience is men, women and others who are above the age of 15 (I chose this age because I believe that nobody below that age would care or know about an art gallery)and my work is intended to be for an art gallery so my audience will be people who love the artwork.

I am going to be shooting the colour film AGFA 200 ASA, I chose this film because it's a cheap film and a great colour film. I also chose colour film because I didn't want to keep doing black and white because, in my opinion, I prefer colour film to black and white. I chose to shoot film because I prefer to shoot film rather than digitally. This is because shooting film makes me more decisive about my images and also makes me think more in depth about what settings to use manually. Whereas if I was shooting film I would be less decisive and more snap happy and probably use aperture priority mode. I plan to shoot for two weeks this is because I will be spending one week in Palma, De Mallorca, Spain and shooting one week in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. I believe that this will be a sufficient amount of time to be able to get some quality social documentary photos.

Unit 25 Final evaluation

Final evaluation For our first task, we had to research studio food photographers in order to take some techniques and learn about studio food photography more. I researched three photographers called Marcus Nilsson, David Munns and Matt Armendariz. What I got from all of those photographers were that simplicity in your photos is the best way to go about it. The next task was primary research where we had to go out and take pictures of food. I chose to go to the Oastler market to take pictures of fruit and vegetables. For this next task, we had to research the two different lighting types which were high key and low key. When researching these lighting types I found that using high key would be a better choice when taking food photographs because it looks like a window like. Unit 25 Exposure meters

Exposure meters  An exposure meter is a device that is used to measure the amount of light to determine a proper exposure. The earliest light meters were called extinction meters and they contained a numbered or lettered row that has natural density filters. This means that when the photographer would meter his subject the filter with the greatest density would still allow incident light to pass through. The letter or number (whatever type of row that you had) would correspond to the filter and this was used as an index into a chart of aperture and shutter speed combinations for a given film speed aka ISO. The only bad thing that occurred with the extinction meters was that they were heavily dependent on the light sensitivity of the human eye, this was bad because this can vary person to person.
